World Cup 2026: Two Continents Collide in Miami

Colombia vs Portugal

As World Cup 2026 group games, few should be better than this Group K encounter in Miami.

One of South American’s finest meet one of Europe’s top dogs, the reigning Nations League holders, with top spot in the standings on the line and, potentially at least, a more straightforward last 32 tie.

Colombia need just a draw to make sure; the Portuguese require a win.

Early hours (UK time) World Cup 2026 highlights any one?

Talking Points

Colombia came close to a title of their own just under two years ago when they narrowly lost to defending world champions Argentina in the 2024 Copa America final.

They have big players of their own too and followed up their opening 3-1 success against Uzbekistan with a 1-0 victory over Congo – Crystal Palace man Daniel Munoz with the only goal.

The latter scoreline may seem tight given they needed a deflected winner and an excellent save from goalkeeper Camilo Vargas to claim all three points. Yet that should not detract from the fact they produced 20 shots and three disallowed goals in a largely controlled showing.

Their star names are Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez, two players who have the guile and knowhow to trouble any opponent.

It’s hard to think it’s 12 years since Rodriguez became a breakout star – he was the tournament’s top scorer, winning the Golden Boot with six goals, including a stunning volley against Uruguay that remains one of the defining moments of World Cup history.

Sporting Lisbon striker Luis Suarez should be fit to play, despite leaving the fray early against Congo due to a shoulder injury.

Central defensive pairing Davinson Sanchez and Jhon Lucumi look like a solid unit, with Munoz’s teammate for club and country, Jefferson Lerma, and young Racing Santander star Gustavo Puerta offering midfield industry.

Portugal who can field arguably the best first-choice midfield in this summer’s competition, comprise an experienced defence, an admirable array of wide forwards and an iconic captain, have had a mixed bag so far.

Their 1-1 draw with Congo drew criticism as the central Africans sealed their first ever World Cup point.

It was a different story against Uzbekistan, though, as Cristiano Ronaldo led the 5-0 rout with a brace – becoming the first player to ever score at six World Cup Finals in the process.

He also became the second oldest man to score at a World Cup, behind the legendary Cameroon forward Roger Milla, who was 42 when he found the net against Russia in 1994.

In fact, the accolades keep coming for a player who has now struck 10 times, having netted once at the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 finals and four times in 2018, and has surpassed the legendary Eusebio to become Portugal’s highest ever goalscorer at the tournament.

That moved Ronaldo onto a staggering 975 career goals and the goal-hungry 41 year-old will be out for more in a contest which should be a step up in opposition for both nations.

The Selecao’s only doubt surrounds Tomas Araujo who picked up an injury against Congo 10 days ago.

Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao are among those pushing to break into the side, – the latter was a scoring substitute the other night – but Joao Felix may have done just about enough to retain his spot in the final third of the field.

When this game kicks-off, the conditions may well be stifling with temperatures expected to hit ‌87 degrees Fahrenheit (30.5° Celsius). That could play into the hands of the South Americans.

Either way it should be an attacking contest full of creativity and endeavour and the result could well set one of these countries on a run into the very latter stages of the tournament.

History

Colombia and Portugal have only met once at senior international level – a goalless draw friendly in 2014.

Betting Tip

I am expecting a closer game than the SBOTOP World Cup 2026 betting odds are anticipating.

Certainly, Portugal 1X2 @ 1.85 and Colombia 1X2 @ 4.27 appear a bigger difference than a match-up between nations separated only by four places in the FIFA world rankings (Colomba are 11th, Portugal seventh).

Asian Handicap odds are a little closer and include Portugal -0.75 @ 2.11 and Colombia +0.25 @ 2.29.

Given the array of attacking talent that could be on display, I won’t be surprised if there’s a handful of goals which is why I’ve strongly considered over 2.75 goals @ 2.38 as my betting tip.

I do think it will be tight though and I have plumped for honours even and a ** prediction of 1X2 Draw @ 3.50, a result which will confirm Colombia as group winners.
