World Cup 2026: Pharaohs Are Set Fair for the Knockout Phase

Egypt vs Iran

After two weeks of jostling for position, the third round of the group stages are upon us and there’s a fascinating clash at Lumen Field on Friday night when World Cup 2026: Egypt vs Iran takes centre stage.

This is a meeting of the surprise top two of the Group G table, with Egypt in first place with four points and Iran on two points alongside Belgium, with New Zealand trailing on one point. Rudi Garcia’s Belgium were favourites to win this group, but the Red Devils have misfired, while Hossam Hassan’s Egypt have taken advantage.

The Persian Cheetahs, managed by Amir Ghalenoei for the second time in his coaching career, have drawn both their opening games and they have been dogged by travel restrictions. With Belgium likely to beat New Zealand in their final game, Iran may well need a win to secure their place; though a third draw might just be enough to qualify as one of the best eight third places.

The Pharoahs meanwhile, are already planning for the knockouts and they will be keen to go through to the next stage unbeaten.

Talking Points

Egypt’s Premier quality

Hassan’s team looked like a very decent outfit in their opening match when they bossed highly ranked Belgium for much of the game after attacking midfielder Emam Ashour gave them a lead with a superb strike. But a Mohamed Hany own goal, under serious pressure from Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku denied Egypt a first win at the World Cup finals.

But, after a stodgy first half against New Zealand, the Pharaohs put matters right and came out with a 3-1 victory to all but book their place in the Round of 32. They were on the back foot when Finn Surman took advantage of slack marking at a corner to give the Kiwis an unexpected lead; but Egypt roared back in impressive style. Mostafa Ziko headed in a cross from Hany to level and then the nation’s talisman stepped forward.

One player sure to feature heavily in the Egypt vs Iran highlights reel is the Pharoah’s Egyptian King Mo Salah. And he got off the mark with a trademark sweeping finish to give Egypt a 2-1 lead before teeing up substitute Trezeguet for the third. Salah has left his beloved Liverpool after a stellar career at Anfield and he is desperate to lead Egypt to greater things this summer, while another Premier League player, Manchester City star Omar Marmoush also looked to be in great form against the Kiwis.

Iran’s admirable spirit

The travel restrictions on the Iran team have been a real problem for the players and coaching staff. They faced the possibility of being unable to play at the finals after the start of hostilities between the USA and Iran in February. The Persian Cheetahs were admitted to the competition but with serious sanctions as they have been forced to train and stay in Mexico, and then travelling further than their opponents for matchdays, while they also had 11 no playing officials banned from entering the USA.

So, to come up with two draws is quite an achievement in the circumstances as the Iran players have showed real courage on the pitch, supported by the fans who wants to keep politics and world conflict out of football. Against New Zealand Iran came from behind twice to rescue a 2-2 draw with goals from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi, and then they picked up a goalless draw against Belgium. It could have been better had Belgium’s Nathan Ngoy not denied a clear goal scoring opportunity, earning himself a red card.

History

Egypt are at their fourth World Cup finals, and they were in the 1934 Round of 16 but have since failed to escape the group stage, most recently in 2018; meanwhile Iran are in their eighth World Cup finals and their fourth on the bounce but they are yet to make a knockout phase.

The Pharoah’s form has been very strong this year, with three wins, two draws and a single defeat, a 2-1 loss to Brazil in a pre-World Cup friendly, while their draws came against Belgium and Spain. Iran have the same record this year of three wins, two draws and a defeat, but except for the draw against Belgium the Persian Cheetahs haven’t played many top nations this year.

Let’s take a look at the latest Egypt vs Iran betting odds and make our call.

Betting Tip

With Iran at SBOTOP odds of 3.80 and the Draw at 2.65 this is a game with all three results firmly in play and the Persian Cheetahs actually sit higher in the FIFA World Rankings than the Pharaohs at 21st place to 27th. But there is no way that Iran’s off field pressures have not affected the team, while Egypt have looked strong in their two openers.

I think this will be a tight game with the Pharoahs having a slight edge, and for a correct score line I’d go for 1-0 to Egypt at 5.50, while a goalless draw at similar odds is also a distinct possibility.
