World Cup 2026: Brazil Can Dash Scotland’s Knockout Hopes

Scotland vs Brazil

Brazil have momentarily taken the top spot in Group C of the World Cup 2026, but they’re not yet out of the woods, with Morocco and Scotland lurking from behind. The Samba Boys will wrap up their group stage campaign with a game against Scotland at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Wednesday.

With Morocco expected to beat Haiti, who are already eliminated, a few hours later in Atlanta, the winner of the Brazil-Scotland match will join the Atlas Lions in the Top 2 to directly qualify for the knockouts, making this a must-win.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men returned to winning ways with a 3-0 rout of Haiti last time out, while Scotland suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Morocco. Only one point separates these two nations, so both of them will fight tooth and nail.

This is easily one of the most compelling matches in matchday three, and SBOTOP is here for the preview.

Talking Points

Scotland’s attack has yet to fire

Steve Clarke hopes that Scotland’s attack will produce more goals in their next game to keep up with Brazil. During their previous loss against Morocco, the Tartan Army failed to register a single shot on target and have managed only five in their last five outings at major tournaments.

John McGinn has scored Scotland’s only World Cup goal thus far, which came against minnows Haiti. Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland have failed to impress, while Scott McTominay has been relatively quiet. Adams, in particular, has drawn criticism, as the Torino forward has had only three touches of the ball in the opposition box in 146 minutes.

With Adams and Shankland underperforming, Clarke could call on Lyndon Dykes to start against Brazil just to give them a different look. Dykes has 10 goals in 53 caps and was one of Charlton Athletic’s top scorers last term. However, we expect Clarke to adopt a pragmatic approach on Wednesday, aiming for a smash-and-grab victory.

On the injury front, Scott McKenna, Lewis Ferguson, and Aaron Hickey were all absent from training over the weekend. However, they could all be back in contention to feature in some capacity against Brazil, per the World Cup 2026 updates.

Neymar probable to play for Brazil

Neymar (calf) has yet to play in this year’s World Cup, but head coach Carlo Ancelotti guaranteed that he will feature in some capacity against Scotland. The 34-year-old Santos forward’s experience should come in handy for the Samba Boys.

He is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, but Neymar will likely come off the bench. Vinicius Jr., Matheus Cunha, and Lucas Paqueta will likely take care of the offensive load.

Raphinha has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in the first half against Haiti, so Bournemouth’s Rayan is expected to take his place on the right wing. The rest of Brazil’s lineup could remain intact, with Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Douglas Santos forming a back four behind the midfield duo of Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes.

History

Wednesday marks the sixth competitive meeting between Scotland and Brazil, with four of their previous games in the World Cup group stage (1974, 1982, 1990, and 1998). After a goalless draw in their first encounter, the Samba Boys have beaten the Tartan Army four times in a row, including their most recent international friendly in March 2011 (2-0).

Scotland are winless in their eight World Cup games against South American sides (D2, L6), conceding an average of 2.5 goals per game. The Tartan Army have scored just nine goals across their last 13 World Cup matches.

Four of Brazil’s last five wins have been clean sheets, and they’ve yet to hit their full stride. They are averaging just 10 shots per game, their lowest at a single World Cup campaign since 1966. Interestingly, their last three group stage losses have come on matchday three.

Betting Tip

The World Cup 2026 odds pick Brazil to beat Scotland and likely join Morocco in the Top 2 of Group C. The Samba Boys are 1.36 favourites to pick up three points, while the Tartan Army are huge 8.60 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.76 in the 1X2 market.

However, the gap between these two teams should be closer, as Scotland can give Brazil headaches. Besides our recommended bet, punters may also add Over 2.25 at 1.65, Over 2.50 at 1.90, Over 2.75 at 2.19, and Total Goal 2-3 at 2.00. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 2-0 in favour of Brazil – the result of their last encounter – yields a robust payday of 5.50 your bet.
