La Liga: Sociedad and Betis in a Saturday Night Basque Bash

Real Sociedad vs Real Betis

Ninth hosts fifth in a fascinating Primera Division clash on Saturday when La Liga: Sociedad vs Betis is the entertainment on offer in the coastal city of San Sebastian.

Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad have climbed up the Primera Division table in a strong recovery after a slow start to the campaign and currently sit a point behind Getafe in seventh and four behind Celta Vigo in sixth. But, courtesy of their Copa triumph, the Basque giants have already secured a Europa League place for 2026/27, so manager Pellegrino Matarazzo can be pleased with his work since he arrived in December.

The La Real boss is the first American coach to win a major trophy in any of the big five leagues in Europe, while Los Verdiblancos boss Manuel Pellegrini has picked up four, a Premier League title and two League Cups with Manchester City and a Copa Del Rey title with Betis in 2022, as well as reaching the final of last season’s Europa Conference League.

Los Verdiblancos look pretty solid in fifth place, ten points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid and six ahead of Celta Vigo; and the visitors will be keen to nail down their Europa spot sooner rather than later.

Talking Points

Sociedad the entertainers

This has been a season of two halves for La Real but Matarazzo’s team can never be accused of playing drab football. Sociedad have scored 52 league goals and conceded 53, they were on a par until they lost 1-0 to Sevilla on Monday. La Real’s 3-3 draw away to Rayo Vallecano last week was more like the Sociedad we know, as they played free-flowing football to lead 3-1 before conceding two late goals, the leveller nine minutes into stoppage time.

Captain marvel Mikel Oyarzabal scored a brace against Vallecano to make it 14 goals and three assists for the campaign and he’s been in stunning form for club and country since the turn of the year. With eleven goals and six assists from his last ten internationals Oyarzabal has booked his place in Luis de la Fuente’s World Cup squad, and La Real can thank their lucky stars he is such a proud Basque player. Alongside Portuguese forward Goncalo Guedes, who has eight goals and four assists, Oyarzabal is the focus of Sociedad’s attacking play, while Icelandic striker Orri Oskarsson and Brais Mendez are also impressing up front.

Matarazzo would like to tighten up his defence which is still missing Robin Le Normand who moved to Atletico Madrid in 2024; but keeper Alex Remeiro remains a sound last line of defence, another stalwart of the club since 2019.

Betis have shrugged off Europa disappointment

Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been solidly in the top five for most of this campaign without really threatening the top four, but that is about par for Los Verdiblancos and will likely deliver Europa football again. But they will be disappointed to have missed out in this year’s competition, falling to Braga at the quarter-final stage, crashing 4-2 at home after drawing the away leg; but they have certainly responded well since, picking up seven points from three league games. They earned a 3-2 victory away to Girona and then two weeks ago Betis hosted Real Madrid effectively ended Los Blancos’ title hopes as a late Hector Bellerin goal produced a 1-1 draw. Last week Betis’ two top scorers were on the mark in a 3-0 win over Real Oviedo. Cucho Hernandez scored a brace to make it ten goals and three assists, while Abde Ezzalzouli scored one and assisted one to make it eight and eight for the campaign.

History

La Real are edging the head-to-head Sociedad vs Betis results over the past 42 encounters with 16 wins to 14 while there have been 12 draws and, in San Sebastian, La Real have won eight to three and there have been nine draws. Betis won the return match 3-1 with goals from Hernandez and Pablo Fornals as well as an own goal courtesy of Remeiro, and there was a Sociedad reply from Mendez.

One win, three draws and two defeats from the last six games is a poor return for Sociedad, though their Copa win has added a bright shine to those results and, while the hosts will be keen to get back to winning ways quickly, this match is arguably more important to their visitors.

Betting Tip

The Sociedad vs Betis betting odds say we are in for a tight game. La Real are at SBOTOP odds of 2.40 to win this clash with the draw at 3.45 and a Betis victory at 3.66, while the most likely scoreline is 1-1 at 6.95.

I think it will be a hard-fought game and I’m backing a first half with neither team taking full control.
