International Friendly: USA Warms up Against the Lions of Teranga

USA vs Senegal

World Cup 2026 hosts USA are in international friendly action in North Carolina on Sunday when they welcome Senegal for a tasty warm-up session.

Mauricio Pochettino’s USA are placed 16th in the FIFA World Rankings, two spots below the Lions of Teranga and Senegal manager Pape Thiaw leads a proud team with a smattering of world stars, so this is a good test of the Stars and Stripes credentials, against another team which plans to have a long stay at the tournament.

The pre-tournament World Cup 2026 betting odds say both these nations can navigate the first group stage and this upcoming clash will give us a few pointers as to which group of players is in the best shape.

Talking Points

How far can USA go?

The hosts are in a testing World Cup group comprising Turkey, Paraguay and Australia but Pochettino’s men expect to navigate the early hurdles and are tipped to make the last 16, and possible even a quarter-final place. Led by talisman Christian Pulisic the USA will have a passionate following roaring them on wherever they play. AC Milan star Pulisic is still, remarkably, only 27 years of age but he seems to have been around for ages, and he has been his nation’s go-to man on the big occasions, scoring 32 goals in 84 internationals since making his debut ten years ago. His speed of foot and thought, superb energy levels and skilful movement make Pulisic the perfect forward and, if he is on his game the Stars and Stripes can go far.

The captain has plenty of lively support around him. Coventry City striker Haji Wright has scored seven in 20 internationals and 44 in 111 games for the newly promoted Sky Blues while Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronson is full of running. In midfield Juventus star Weston McKennie and Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive youngster Malik Tilman will get the fans off their feet, while Premier League defenders Chris Richards of Crystal Palace and Antonee Robinson of Fulham add serious quality in the back line.

With a career win percentage of 49 per cent and 54 per cent with the USA, Argentine coach Pochettino is one of the best man managers in the business and his teams play aggressive, high pressing and attacking football, and he has the players to succeed.

The Teranga Lions have a serious bite

France, Norway and Iraq await Senegal in Group I at the World Cup in June and the latest odds suggest the Lions of Teranga are a decent bet for a last 16 place. With only one loss throughout 2025, and one, hugely controversially awarded defeat in 2026, Thiaw’s men are devilishly hard to beat and they pack a real punch up front. With an attack line of Sadio Mane, now at Al Nassr, Nicolas Jackson of Bayern Munich, Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye the Lions have a big goal threat. Former Liverpool star Mane is his nation’s top scorer of all time with 53 goals from his 124 games while Sarr, a powerful and pacey winger has bagged 19 goals in 82 starts, and surely there is more to come from Ndiaye and Jackson.

Alongside Mane, Senegal have other stars playing in the Saudi Pro League, recently won by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr. Keeper Edouard Mendy now of Al Ahli is well known to Chelsea fans where he won the 2021 Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly plays for Al Hilal and he is best known for his time at Napoli where, over eight campaigns he established himself as one of the best centre backs in Europe. Another player to look out for is Tottenham Hotspur’s 23 year old midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, who provided the assist for Brennan Johnson in Spurs’ 2025 Europa League final win over Manchester United.

History

The Stars and Stripes have never bettered their third placed finish in 1930, making 11 attempts since then, while, with four appearances at the World Cup finals Senegal’s best effort was a quarter-final place in 2022.

After winning their final three games in 2025, the USA have lost both their 2026 outings, friendly games against Belgium and Portugal. Meanwhile Senegal have five wins and one defeat in 2026, a controversial AFCON reversal to winners Morocco, so they come into this game fighting fit.

Betting Tip

Here at SBOTOP, we’ll be back with the latest World Cup 2026 news as it unfolds over the next couple of weeks but in the meantime, this is a fascinating friendly match to call. The USA are favourites to win this tussle at a price of 2.35, with Senegal at 2.90 and the draw at 3.44 and I can see the spoils shared in a 1-1 draw.
