Champions League: Gunners Eager to Send Sporting Packing

Arsenal vs Sporting

Arsenal plan to reach back-to-back Champions League semi-finals for the first time when they host Sporting at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday for the second leg of their quarter-final tie. The Gunners secured a narrow 1-0 win in the reverse fixture last week, so they must bring their A-game in front of their home crowd.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, they couldn’t follow up on their first-leg win. They lost 2-1 against Bournemouth in their last Premier League match, and as a result, their lead at the top of the English top-flight standings has been cut to six points, with Manchester City lurking with a game in hand.

Sporting bounced back with a 1-0 win over Estrela Amadora to remain second in the Liga Portugal table. And head coach Rui Borges’ men should smell blood against a lacklustre Arsenal side this midweek.

Talking Points

Arsenal’s defensive frailties are showing up

Save for their shutout win over Sporting in the first leg last week, Arsenal’s defencive steel has abandoned them in recent weeks, having conceded six goals against Manchester City, Southampton, and Bournemouth, leading to their unceremonious exits in the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

Against the Cherries, there was a tense atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium after Eli Junior Kroupi opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Viktor Gyokeres momentarily calmed the nerves when he scored the leveller in the penalty spot after Ryan Christie’s handball. However, Bournemouth eventually took the lead for good in the second half when Alex Scott ran on to Evanilson’s tip on the edge of the penalty box and shot past David Raya’s hands to stun the crowd.

It doesn’t help that Arteta’s side is dealing with fitness issues, as Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, and Bukayo Saka are questionable to play on Wednesday after being out against the Cherries. Mikel Merino (foot) is already ruled out, and his replacement, Martin Zubimendi, could be rotated after looking spent against Bournemouth. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie could be back on the bench.

After their second-leg match against Sporting, Arsenal must travel to Manchester next weekend to take on Manchester City.

Lineup boosts for Sporting

Sporting will get a huge boost in the middle of the park, as Morten Hjulmand is available again after serving his suspension in the opening leg. The Danish midfielder picked up where he left off against Estrela Amadora, completing 72 touches, eight passes into the final third, six ball recoveries, three key defencive contributions, and winning seven of his nine duels (ground and air).

In other Champions League 2026 news, the competition committee confirmed that Luis Suarez (not the Uruguayan one) was the receiving end of an administrative error. The Colombian striker, the Lions’ top scorer with 24 goals, was thought to have collected a phantom yellow card last week, which would’ve had him suspended for the return leg.

History

Arsenal won 1-0 in the opening leg last Tuesday, as Gabriel Martinelli found Kai Havertz for a late score and David Raya provided a much-needed steady presence between the sticks to become Man of the Match. At the same time, Max Dowman became the youngest-ever player to play in the Champions League quarter-finals at 16 years and 97 days old.

The Gunners boast an eight-game unbeaten home run against Portuguese sides in Europe, winning six and drawing two, excluding penalty shootouts. Arsenal have won 17 of their 18 continental two-legged ties when winning the first leg away.

Sporting have never won a two-legged European tie after dropping the opening leg by at least a one-goal margin at home, and the Lions have lost 13 of their last 14 such ties.

Betting Tip

Just like in the opening leg, the SBOTOP Champions League 2026 odds favour Arsenal to dispatch Sporting this Wednesday. The Gunners are priced at 1.42, whereas the Lions are huge 6.30 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.15 in the 1X2 market.

Despite the massive disparity, we believe that it’ll be tricky for Arsenal to close this one out, especially with Sporting playing with house money. Besides our recommended bet, punters may also add Under 3.00 at 1.62, Under 2.75 at 1.86, and Under 2.50 at 2.07 to the parlay since we expect the outcome to be similar to the first leg last week.

The Correct Score of 1-0 in favour of Arsenal – the result of the first leg – is on offer at 6.30. But it would be tempting to add the Correct Score of 1-1 and Total Goal 2-3 at 2.01 to the parlay for additional value.
