Uruguay vs Spain
Friday night football sees two of the World Cup’s royalty coming together as former champions Uruguay and Spain meet face to face in their final group games.
This is a battle between the top two in World Cup Group H with Spain safely sitting on four points, and Uruguay with two, but there is real danger for Marcelo Bielsa’s side after drawing with both Saudi Arabia and then the new boys Cape Verde. When the other two Group H teams meet a win for either would mean Uruguay would have to beat Luis de la Fuente’s Spain to guarantee their passage to the Round of 16.
Should Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde draw then Bielsa’s men would need a draw and that won’t be easy against the nation which the World Cup 2026 betting odds have consistently rated as the team to beat. But De la Fuente’s men have suffered a little disruption in the run up to this game as they had their training called off mid-session earlier this week when high speed gusts and lightning swept across Tennessee.
Has the bad weather done Bielsa and his team a favour? Only time will tell.
Talking Points
Defensive horror show might cost Uruguay
A goal from Maxi Araujo gave Uruguay a decent 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia but that point would only be any good if they went on the beat Cape Verde in their second outing. But after holding Spain to a goalless draw in their first World Cup encounter the Blue Sharks proved to be dangerous again when they took on Uruguay in Miami.
Cape Verde played with real confidence and gusto, taking the lead but after falling behind they took advantage of some calamitous Uruguay defending to earn a 2-2 draw and give themselves a real chance of progressing to the knockout phase, and what a story that would be. After Kevin Pina fired home a long range free-kick to put Cape Verde ahead Uruguay responded well and were soon 2-1 ahead as Max Araujo scored his second goal of the tournament and then teed up Agustin Canobbio seven minutes later.
Bielsa’s boys were comfortable until a moment of madness gifted Cape Verde a goal. A poor square pass from Mathias Olivera spooked keeper Fernando Muslera and he rushed out of his goal, only to be chipped by a jubilant Helio Varela. It would have been funny if it hadn’t been so costly to Uruguay who are now staring down the barrel of an early exit. Uruguay thought they had a late winner when Araujo found the net but he was narrowly offside.
Alongside Araujo, Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde is Uruguay’s best attacking hope, while Atletico Madrid star Jose Maria Gimenez remains the dominant force in the heart of defence; and Bielsa’s men need to get it right at both ends of the pitch if they are to stand any chance against Spain on Friday.
Basque boys are doing the business for Spain
Spain’s opening draw against Cape Verde was one of, if not the most stunning of all the results at this World Cup but, while Uruguay fluffed their second game La Roja were relentless as they dismantled Saudi Arabia with a 4-0 victory. Real Sociedad star Mikel Oyarzabal put in a man-of-the-match performance with two goals and an assist. Lamine Yamal was back in the starting line up and he was on hand to tap in a cross from the Sociedad man, who then added a quickfire double of his own to end the contest before the first half drinks break. La Roja’s Barcelona contingent will be key to Spain’s success, with Pedri and Dani Olmo both in good form and, after an own goal made it 4-0, Ferran Torres thought he had added a fifth but his effort was ruled out.

This was a statement win for Spain among some eye-catching World Cup 2026 results, particularly as La Roja’s neighbours Portugal came to the party on Tuesday with a 5-0 hammering of Uzbekistan. The World Cup is starting to bubble, and Spain are sure to provide plenty of fizz.
History
Spain are at their 17th finals and were champions in 2010; meanwhile Uruguay have been at the World Cup finals 15 times and have been champions twice, but some time ago in 1930 and 1950.
With eight wins and four draws Spain are unbeaten since the start of 2025 while Uruguay won three, drew two and lost one in 2025 before drawing all four of their 2026 fixtures; the last outing a particularly frustrating stalemate.
Betting Tip
Uruguay are certainly up against it at SBOTOP odds of 7.00 to win this game against a Spain side strongly fancied at 1.50, with the draw at 4.00.
The South Americans are going to have to go for it on Friday and Spain are rarely short of goals, so I’m backing a game with three or more.
