Premier League: Trigger-Happy Clubs Clash at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest

Trigger-happy Premier League owners are commonplace in football nowadays, but rarely have they been more excitable this season than in West London and by the River Trent.

Still, it’s not inconceivable that both Chelsea and Nottingham Forest could end the season on a successful note.

Indeed, their meeting at Stamford Bridge on Monday could go some way to determining the direction of those respective aspirations.

Talking Points

Let’s be honest, there was an inevitability when, just 106 days on from his appointment, Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior as coach.

Similar to the appointment of Alvaro Arbeloa at Real Madrid in January, I was staggered at the respective decisions to replace experienced bosses with rookies midseason.

Yes, Rosenior was never equipped for the job. But if football writers like myself can clearly see that, how come owners who deal with such matters each day cannot?

So, who is to blame for Chelsea’s recent slump? The man who signed a five-and-a-half-year deal after arriving from French club Strasbourg, or the owners who appointed him, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. The latter, of course.

Now with an interim, Calum McFarlane, in charge for the second time this season, the onus is on finally getting back to winning ways in the league and keeping alive their faint aspirations of securing a Champions League spot.

They didn’t even look close to managing that in their last league outing, a 3-0 defeat at Brighton, which was their fifth consecutive league defeat without scoring, the club’s worst scoreless run since 1912.

Rosenior, who managed just 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions, described the performance as “indefensible” and “unacceptable” after facing angry chants from Chelsea’s travelling supporters on the south coast.

Within 24 hours, he was gone, and McFarlane has been tasked with lifting spirits, a process helped by victory over Leeds in the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend from a Chelsea team with something to prove.

I said at the start of the season that I doubted their ability to challenge for both the Premier League and Champions League, but I didn’t think the drop-off would be this great.

As acclaimed writer Henry Winter acknowledged last week, while a significant compensation payment will soften the blow for Rosenior, his pride will be wounded and his reputation damaged. To borrow the phrase of the club he leaves behind, it will be a period of “self-reflection”.

While Chelsea reflect on their structural and leadership shortcomings, Rosenior should talk to friends and managerial peers about what occurred, how much was his responsibility, and how much was simply the madness of modern Chelsea. It is the latter which is holding them back right now.

If the dysfunction and turbulence that characterises Chelsea are clear, Forest have not exactly benefited from consistency in the technical area this season, with Vitor Pereira their fourth manager since the campaign began last August.

By contrast, though, their recent Premier League 2026 highlights have pushed them towards safety.

Last time out, they stunned Sunderland with a sensational 5-0 win, a result which extended their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.

In one of their best displays of the season, the boys from the Trent went from 1-0 up to 4-0 ahead in the space of six first-half minutes by capitalising on some Sunderland errors and displaying a ruthlessness in front of goal.

The statistics point to Forest being close to safety: only six teams have ever been relegated from the Premier League with 39 or more points in a 38-game campaign.

The last two were Birmingham and Blackpool, who both went down with 39 in 2010-11.

There is not enough wriggle room to be complacent, though, and this game comes in the middle of a hectic eight days, sandwiched between a two-legged European semi-final against Midlands neighbours Aston Villa.

Although the importance of survival is clear, they could be forgiven if, subconsciously, that is where their main focus lies over the next week, especially now they take a one-goal lead into the second leg at Villa Park.

Forest have scored more goals than any other top-tier side (16) since the arrival of their fourth manager of the season in February – the often underrated Chris Wood’s return from a serious knee injury has galvanised the team, and Igor Jesus in particular.

With West Ham and Spurs hot on their heels, a point at Stamford Bridge would go a long way to easing closer to safety for a side that has secured some superb victories this season, for a side at the wrong end of the table.

History

Chelsea have the historical advantage (43 wins to 27 Forest triumphs with 31 draws), but that has been greatly enhanced since they were owned by billionaires, with Forest only defeating them once in their last 14 meetings, which spans 29 years in all competitions.

That came in January 1997 in the Premier League when Stuart Pearce and the late Chris Bart-Williams scored the goals in a 2-0 win at the City Ground. This game last term ended 1-1, as Wood and Noni Madueke traded goals early in the second half.

Chelsea have beaten Forest twice since, though, including 3-0 earlier this season when Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto, and Reece James were the men on target before Ange Postecoglou became Forest’s second managerial casualty of the season.

Their very first meeting was in October 1906 in Division Two, a 3-1 home win for Forest.
