Coppa Italia: Inter Milan Should Have It Easy Against Torino

Inter Milan are eager to win as many trophies as possible this season, and the Coppa Italia is their first chance of doing so. Following their 5-1 rout of Venezia in the Round of 16 last December, the Nerazzurri will face Torino in the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening at San Siro.

It has been an eventful last week for Cristian Chivu’s men. They’re on a three-game winning streak in all competitions following a 3-1 setback against Arsenal. After unloading on Pisa (6-2), they notched back-to-back 2-0 wins against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Cremonese to stay at the top of the Serie A table with an eight-point cushion.

Meanwhile, Torino reached the quarter-finals, upsetting AS Roma 3-2 in the previous round. Marco Baroni’s men also broke their four-game losing streak in the league with a 1-0 home win against Lecce yesterday.

Lautaro Martinez is closing in on more records for Inter Milan, as the Argentine striker scored his third goal in his last three league appearances during their 2-0 win at Cremonese yesterday. With 170 goals under his belt, Martinez is only one goal shy of Roberto Boninsegna, who’s in third place in the club’s all-time scorer list.

Given his fine form this season, Martinez could pass Boninsegna as soon as their upcoming match against Torino. Ahead of them are only Alessandro Altobelli (209 goals) and Giuseppe Meazza (284 goals). He’s expected to lead the line again for the Nerazzurri, with either Pio Esposito, Ange-Yoan Bonny, or Marcus Thuram as his frontline partner in Cristian Chivu’s 3-5-2 formation.

Matteo Darmian, Andy Diouf, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan could also get more playing time against Torino if Chivu wishes to tinker with his midfield. Veteran centre-backs Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij could also play after taking the night off against Cremonese.

Moreover, according to local reports, the one guaranteed lineup rotation Chivu is set to make is the starting goalkeeper position. Josep Martinez, who has fully recovered from his ankle injury, could start ahead of Yann Sommer for his first appearance of 2026 against Il Toro.

 

Adams breaks his Torino drought

Marco Baroni’s side has built some momentum ahead of their Coppa Italia match against Inter Milan, as Che Adams helped them secure a 1-0 win over Lecce to break their four-game losing streak in the league. 

Adams found the back of the net near the half-hour mark after receiving a floated pass from Nikola Vlasic. Before this, the former Southampton forward had not scored in the Italian top-flight since the reverse fixture in Lecce on November 30, where they lost 2-1 on the road.

On Wednesday, Adams could draw another start alongside Duvan Zapata in the final third, as Giovanni Simeone, Il Toro’s joint-top scorer with five league goals, is dealing with a calf injury.

Inter Milan are one of the winningest calcios in the Coppa Italia, with nine trophies and six runners-up finishes. The Nerazurri last won it all in 2023, winning 2-1 against Fiorentina in the final through Lautaro Martinez’s first-half brace after going down by one goal.

Torino are no strangers to winning the Coppa Italia, with five trophies and eight runners-up finishes. However, Il Toro’s last cup triumph dates back to 1993.

Cristian Chivu’s side demolished Torino in their first Serie A meeting this season, winning 5-0 at San Siro last August, as Alessandro Bastoni, Marcus Thuram (brace), Lautaro Martinez, and Ange-Yoan Bonny were on the scoresheet. After Wednesday, these two sides will square off again in late April in Turin.
